Beloved in Christ, another sunday is here with us and as usual we have the opportunity to gather together and reflect on three wonderful readings (Isaiah 45:1, 4-6; 1Thes. 1:1-5b; Mtt 22:15-21). I have titled this homily “TO CAESAR AND TO GOD” . My aim is to led you to understand Jesus’ statement of  ” give to caesar what belongs to caesar and to God what belongs to God”(mtt.22:21).
Infact, Mtt.22:21 is one of the most popular verses of the Scripture and some people who are in error  refer to it as a justification for their wrongdoing. That is,  for these people as long as I fulfil my religious obligations whatever I do with my life is none of your business. For example,  I can go about stealing after worshipping God . They argue it is a typical case of giving to God what belongs to God and to caesar what belongs to caesar. How erroneous?
Beloved, I invite you on this sunday to think about Mtt.22:21 in terms of  priority and influence as far as your life is concerned. Is your relationship with God manifested in your daily life. Also ask yourself what matters most in your life.
I pray you will help your friends to understand that Matt.  22:21 is not a justification for wrongdoing but a call on us to allow our relationship with God  to determine how we discharge our responsibilities in this world by sharing this with them.
This has been Fr. Dolphyne’s presentation.
