Made for love

Beloved in christ, we are here this morning to celebrate the 30th sunday in ordinary time(year a).Consequently we are giving three wonderful readings to reflect on; Ex.22:20-26; 1 Thess 1:5-10 and Matthew 22:34-40. I have therefore decided to reflect with you on the theme” made for love”. This theme is to enable you to put into context the warning from God to Israel in the first reading as well as Jesus’ answer to the Pharisees in the gospel.
We are thus being reminded that love of God and of neighbour are two side of the same coin. Thus in 1 John 4:20, the apostle says those who love God and hate their brothers or sisters are liars.
This notwithstanding we often hear people saying love is a verb. The problem is that’s not the whole truth. Christian love is a noun because it originates in God and ends in God.
Beloved the danger is that if we reduce love to mere action we will miss love at it source and thus become Pharisees.
And in the the words of St. Paul; if I give all away and I have no love, I gain nothing(1Cor 13:3). Therefore understand that love is not merely   the action of meeting other’s needs; but it includes the motive of the action.
Kindly let your friends understand that as christians we are made for love and that love is founded on compassion and inspired or motivated by justice by sharing this homily with them.
This has been Fr. Dolphyne’s presentation.
May God bless you.
