My dear friend in Christ, it is with great joy that  I welcome you to this liturgy for the first sunday of Advent, a sign that the Church has begun a new year. The word “advent” is from the Latin word “adventum” which means “coming”. Advent is a season with a twofold character, a time to prepare for Christmas when Christ’s first coming is remembered and a time also to directs our mind and heart to Christ’s second coming at the end of time.
Therefore I have chosen “BE ALERT, FOR YOU DON’T KNOW THE HOUR”, as our theme for this sunday.
Beloved in Christ,  alot of people in the world today are taking almost everything for granted and this theme is to a large extent an invitation not to lose focus because Christ second coming is definitely certain. And as we wait Jesus warns not to be idle hence the need to be alert. We are not to occupy ourselves with the time and date of Christ second coming but we are to make ourselves ready knowing that Christ is coming.  Being ready for God is too important to postpone, because God comes first  and demands that we give him our best.
My dear friend, this morning we shall lite the first advent candle who is also called the candle of hope or the candle of prophecy. This candle invites us to have hope because our God is faithful and will keep the promises made to us.
Beloved in Christ,  I humbly invite you to share this homily with your friends so as to remind them that the  Church has begun a new liturgical year,  and we on our part as we prepare for Christmas must also not lose sight of Christ second coming at the end of time.
This has been Fr. Dolphyne’s presentation for the first sunday of Advent.
May God bless you.
