HOMILY FOR HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY, YR B

READINGS

DEUT. 4:32-34,39-40

ROM. 8:14-17

MAT. 28:16-20

Beloved in Christ, every year  on the first sunday after Pentecost sunday we celebrate Trinity sunday  during which the  readings from Holy Scripture place emphasis on the Three Divine Persons of the Blessed Trinity. I have therefore chosen” CREATED FOR RELATIONSHIP” as our theme for this sunday. This theme is to drive home the fact  that man is a relational being and not an island.

Beloved, the dogma of the Trinity teaches that-

There is One God and in this One God there are three Divine Persons; the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God.  Yet there are no three Gods but one, eternal incomprehensible God. The Father is not more God than the Son, neither is the Son more God than the Holy Spirit. Thus, today we celebrate the unity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Beloved,  allow me to share this story with you about the Trinity.

On a friday preceeding Trinity sunday, a priest decided to visit  the class two of the parish school. While there he asked the pupils,  ” who can tell me what the Blessed Trinity means ? “A little girl lisped, “The Blethed Twinity meanth there are thwee perthonth in one God”. The priest, taken aback by the lisp, said, ” would you say that again? I don’t understand what you said”. The little girl answered, “Y ‘ not suppothed to underthtand; it’th a mythtewy”.

Beloved, though we cannot grasp fully the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity as the legendary story of St. Augustine walking on the  beach and finding the young boy trying to pour the entire ocean into a tiny hole on the shore teaches, we cannot also deny the existence of three Persons in God. For to comprehend God is out of the question but to worship Him is the need of the heart.

Beloved, the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God himself (CCC 234).

Historically, the solemnity of the Blessed Trinity was introduced in the  9th century and was only inserted in the general calendar of the Church in the fourteenth century by Pope John XXIII.

Also, this dogma was defined in response to Arianism- a heresy which denied the Divinity of Jesus Christ at the Council of Nicaea(325).

Beloved,  our belief in the Trinity is an invitation to experience God. Consequently, Moses in the reading reminds the Israelites of God’s immense love for them while Paul in the second reading also teaches that through baptism we have entered into the life of the Trinity and this idea is echoed in Matthew’s Gospel, where the risen Jesus commissions his disciples to introduce all humanity into the life of God through baptism.

Beloved , I invite you therefore to share this homily with your friends to remind them that on Trinity sunday we focus are the qualities of God as our friend; his love and faithfulness, his caring and sharing. And that if we are created in the image of such a God and are baptised into his family, then we must reflect in our lives the same qualities of friendship in our relationship with one another.

This has been Fr. Dolphyne’s presentation for Holy Trinity Sunday, year b.

May God richly bless you.
