Wis. 2:12,17-20
Jas 3:16-4:3
Mk 9:30-37

Beloved in Christ, this morning as we gather to worship our God, I would  like to invite you to pay special attention to Mark 9:34 ‘ IF ANYONE WISHES TO BE FIRST,HE SHALL BE THE LAST OF ALL AND ALSO THE SERVANT OF ALL ‘ and see this verse as the foundation of our theme this morning, which is ‘CALLED TO SERVE ‘;  like the disciples of Jesus many of us Christians also fail to understand this aspect of our call and ironically believe that we are called to be ‘lords’ and ‘masters’.
Beloved , Our Lord is emphatic this morning and insists that service is the hallmark of His followers and they on their part must desire it and have the competence to do it. Consequently, Jesus sees in the example of the little child the exact opposite of the adult. For while the adults seek security and in the process become afraid and fearful, the child lives  in a world of dependence and trust and thus accepts  reality as it is.
My dear friend, it should therefore not surprise  us when the first reading describes for us the plot by the wicked to destroy the life of the just one; for his life and words are a reproach to them (v.12-16). Though this hatred for the just man has not stopped the just man should remember that he is called to be gentle and also to endure.
Beloved in Christ, this call to serve is difficult to embrace but with prayer and a relationship with God we will find it  possible . But for this our prayer to be attended to by God, James in the second reading admonishes us to examine our motives for praying.
Beloved, I therefore urge you to embrace this call to serve as an imitation of Jesus who though was  in the form of God, did not count equality with God (Phil. 2:6-8). And also to resolve to follow Jesus with the simplicity and trust of a child accepting that He knows what is best for us.
This has been a Fr. Dolphyne’s presentation for www.dolphyne14.WordPress.com as we celebrate the 25th sunday in ordinary time, year b. Kindly share this homily with your friends and May God richly bless you.
