HOMILY FOR THE 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER, YEAR C
READINGS
ACTS 15:1-2,22-29
REV 21:10-14,22-23
JOHN 14:23-29

THEME :OBEDIENCE : THE SIGN OF LOVE

Beloved in Christ, we celebrate the 6th Sunday of Easter and it is also the last sunday before we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord, Mother Church therefore invites us to reflect on Jesus’ farewell discourse with his disciples. This was to prepare them for his eminent departure from this world and the coming of the Holy Spirit.
My dear friend in Christ, though Jesus begins his discourse with the sentence : whoever loves me will keep my word… whoever does not love me does not keep my word( John 14:23-24), it should be understood in the context of loving  God as a gift from God and that if you love me, you will by this love that I have given you keep my word. It is therefore not the case of, if you love me prove it by keeping my commandments. Love then is the power by which we keep the commandments and this love originates from God and goes back to God.
Beloved, Jesus also used the occasion to school the disciples about who the Holy Spirit is and  what His role will be among them.
It is on account of this that the Early Church was able to take the gospel of Jesus Christ into Gentile lands there by winning more and more converts for Christ.  The first reading this morning testifies that even conflicts and controversial issues in the early church were resolved with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Beloved, the needs of the church today make  it imperative for us to continuously  seek the assistance of the Holy Spirit, who is our advocate.  This is predicated on the premise that Christians today should not only be content with routine practice of Faith, but should search for new forms to express our Faith as well as new ways to apply our christianity to current issues.
Beloved,  preparing for the physical departure of Jesus from this world meant for the disciples docility to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit as well as a genuine obedience to the commandments of Jesus Christ.  Let us therefore genuinely resolve to follow the path marked out for us by our fathers in the faith,  namely a life of obedience to the words of Jesus Christ and cooperation with inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
This has been a Fr. Dolphyne’s  presentation for www. padredolphyne. WordPress. com as we celebrate the 6th Sunday of Easter, year c.
Kindly share this homily with your friends and May God richly bless you.
