Friends, yesterday our beloved motherland was trending on social media with the hashtag ###justiceforcaptmahama###, who was lynched at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region of Ghana. And as the tears rolled down from our eyes as we sat by the rivers of Babylon in remembrance of Zion in our quest for answers as regard the intention for this barbaric act against humanity, the Holy Roman Catholic Church also started to trend. It was as if the Church wanted to say the solution to our pain, hurt and brokenness lies in God, to whom all men are accountable for their deeds while in the body.
But to my surprise and disappointment, such was not the case but rather an alleged video of Bishop Dag Heward- Mills, founder and Presiding Bishop of the Lighthouse Chapel International. This video alleges that Bishop Heward- Mills, says the Catholic Church has an anointing that can last a long time. And at the same time called on other churches to be humble and learn from the Catholic Church.
Friends, I know some of you would wonder why I have decided to write about an issue such as this, when in fact he is not the only one to have spoken well of the Catholic Church. But before you accuse me of giving him attention, allow me to state that as a proud Catholic it is not the praise or the approval of men that I seek but the praise or the approval of God (c.f. John 12:43).
Friends, let the truth be told, we don’t need these “compliments ” to confirm and affirm what we believe as Catholics. For we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man but to please God who tests our hearts (c.f. 1 Thessalonians 2:4).
Consequently, this is what makes me sad that some Catholics think that maintaining our Catholic identity makes us ” dull, boring and uninspiring “. And they further argue that the drifting from our church is the insistence on our “being Catholic “. For this reason some parishes today are Catholic only in the name they bear and not in what goes on in their celebration of the Liturgy.
This situation Cardinal Sarah says is a profound crisis which has affected the Church’s liturgy due to the fact that it’s Center is no longer God and the adoration of Him, but rather men and their alleged ability to ‘do’ something to keep themselves busy during the Eucharistic celebrations ( c.f. https://goo.gl/dtPfhm).
It is therefore for this reason, that compliments from people such as Bishop Heward-Mills should led us as Catholics into deeper reflection as to why we are neglecting the study and the teaching of the Catechism. For it reveals to us how we have failed in the teaching ministry that Jesus Christ entrusted to us in our desire to promote the ritualistic aspect of the great commission ( c.f. Matthew 28:19). Let us not be concerned as to why he is praising the Catholic Church, the timing of compliments and the place where he made these remarks.
We are thus to draw inspiration and allow him to ignite in us a sincere and a deeper yearning for the teaching of the Catholic Church.
