HOMILY FOR THE SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD, YEAR B

HOMILY FOR THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

READINGS:

Isaiah 60:1-6

Ephesians 3:2-3,5-6

Matthew 2:1-12

THEME:

* KNOWLEDGE ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH *

Dearly beloved, this morning is special for we celebrate the epiphany of the Lord as well as the first Sunday of 2018. For us, epiphany commemorates the appearance or manifestation of God in human form. This reminds us that the son is given for all of us, not just a chosen people.

Beloved, that God should make an appearance in human form reminds us of the responsibility we have to encounter Him and to make Him known. This is what Isaiah captures so beautifully in the first reading when He said, Nations shall walk by your light, for you shall radiate the glory of God.

My dear friends, to encounter God and to radiate God’s glory calls for adequate preparation which will be manifested in a change of lifestyle and attitude. Also, the visit of the wise men and the attitude of those in Jerusalem is a warning to those of us who only take pride in our religious heritage without a corresponding change of lifestyle as the gospel demands.

Beloved, it is not the possession of the truth that matters but how prepared we are to walk in the light of the truth that we possess. The people of Jerusalem had all the scriptures, therefore discovering the new born King would not have been difficult yet they failed. Yet knowledge alone without commitment and determination is not enough.

My dear friend, how good is your education if it cannot affect your life positively. Therefore, like the wise men we too need a vision for our lives especially as we begin this new year; but we are warned that without determination and commitment we will achieve nothing.

Finally, let us resolve that as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, we will not allow any obstacle or challenge to stop us from achieving our vision for this year.
