Msgr. Óscar Romero to be made saint

Óscar Romero will be named a saint. Pope Francis confirmed the miracle that will lead to him being bestowed with the highest honor. It involves the inexplicable cure of a pregnant woman on the brink of death.

Msgr. Óscar Romero’s beatification cause was begun in 1990. The diocesan phase began in 1994 and concluded in 1996. It was later delegated to the Vatican, where it remained static for years. Vincenzo Paglia, the cause’s postulator in Rome, witnessed the entire process.

“I’m overwhelmed with happiness, because today concludes a difficult process that has faced opposition. Romero is finally a witness the Church provides as an example for all of the faithful.”

Benedict XVI encouraged the process during his final months as pope, but Pope Francis was the one who took the definitive steps.

“For me, there’s a providential coincidence. I wondered about the reason for many of the difficulties in the process. Today, I realize it was probably because the Lord was waiting for a Latin American pope to declare a Latin American bishop a saint. I’m sure Romero is protecting, inspiring and accompanying Pope Francis from heaven.”

Msgr. Óscar Romero was beatified on May 23, 2015 at a massive ceremony in San Salvador. The date of his canonization has still not been revealed by Pope Francis. It will most likely be announced at the consistory due to take place in May.

The canonization ceremony could happen at the end of this year in Rome, or even in Latin America during World Youth Day in Panama in 2019.
