HOMILY FOR PENTECOST SUNDAY, YEAR B
THEME : FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
Beloved in Christ, today Mother Church celebrates Pentecost Sunday- the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the apostles who had all met in the Upper room. Thus we celebrate the beginning of the Church’s missionary endeavors, because filled with the Holy Spirit the apostles became witnesses of the resurrection.
Beloved, it is clear that though the apostles were sent by Christ, it is the coming of the Holy Spirit that empowered them to go out and preach Christ. For having been overcome with fear and timidity after the death of Christ, it was on Pentecost day that they were renewed and empowered by the Holy Spirit to execute the mandate of witnessing entrusted to them by Christ.
My dear friend, Pentecost day which for us Christians celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit was for the ancient Israelites , a harvest festival which was celebrated 50 days after the beginning of the harvest. Later, when the Temple of Jerusalem was built, it was transformed into a pilgrimage feast which celebrated the covenant that God made with Israel on Mt. Sinai.
Beloved, the celebration today is to remind us that filled with the Holy Spirit we are empowered to witness to Christ. In fact, the Holy Spirit is the driving force of our lives. For St. Paul, ‘the Spirit is our life’(Gal. 5:24). We are not to give in to fear or timidity.
This day also is a day of fulfilled promise and the assurance that God always rewards obedience and steadfastness in prayer. Therefore, no matter the challenge of your life ,the option to give up is not available to the Christian but to persevere to the end knowing that victory is always assured.
Let us arise from our slumber for the night is far gone and the day is at hand. Now is the time to work for our salvation, for the coming of the Holy Spirit signifies the end of laziness in the Christian.
