HOMILY FOR 31ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B
VALIDATE YOUR LOVE FOR GOD
Beloved in Christ. today as we celebrate the 31st Sunday in ordinary time, through the first reading and the gospel, The Church is reminding us that our love for God cannot exist in a vacuum. In fact, this love of God needs to be validated by our love for neighbour.
In other words if you love God, don’t just say it with your lips but show it by how you treat your neighbour.
But unfortunately for most people who profess love of God, translating this love into their relationships is absent. For this reason, their love of God is separated because it has no effect on their lives.
However, for Jesus, those who love God should prove this love by how they relate to their neighbour. He therefore challenges us to manifest our love for God and this is where some of us are lacking as Christians.
This tells us that the Christian life is to be seen as expressed in actions, in our day to day interaction with the people we come into contact with. We are challenged to give a concrete expression to the love of God we profess by loving our neighbours.
If we love God with our whole being, we will worship and obey Him just as people who love what they do, do it with their whole being. Also for those who are moved by the love of God there is no counting of cost. This is because they also know that genuine love demands true sacrifice.
Inherent in every man, woman and child is the image of God. We are therefore called upon as Christians to love our neighbours as though they are God.
