EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
EPH. 3:2-3a, 5-6
THEME: KNOWLEDGE THAT TRANSFORMS
My dear friend in Christ,
this morning as we gather to worship our God on the occasion of the first sunday of this year, Mother church is also inviting us to celebrate the feast of Epiphany.
Epiphany means manifestation or appearance. Originally, it referred to the visit of a king to the people of his province. But for us it is a celebration of God’s appearance or manifestation of himself in human history. Hence, it is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Saviour of the world. Thus Epiphany reminds us of the adoration of Jesus by the wise men from the East, together with his baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee.
Epiphany is therefore celebrated on 6th January, unless it is assigned to the sunday occuring between 2nd and 8th January on the liturgical calendar.
Beloved in Christ, we are living in a world where people of some religious persuasion tend to think that their religious tradition is the only way to God. And thus condemn all others but this celebration reminds us that God is not limited to only one religious tradition. Therefore we need to tolerate and respect one another.
Beloved, when Jesus was born two groups came to visit him namely, the shepherds and the wise men. The shepherds learnt about his birth from the angel ( supernatural revelation) while the wise men had to interpret nature( natural revelation) to discover the birth of the child. This affirms for us the two ways by which God reveals himself in human history , that is natural and supernatural revelation. The wise men saw the star and came to a new understanding.
Beloved in Christ, it is not the truth we possess but how ready we are to walk the light of the scriptures that matter. The people of Jerusalem had all the scripture therefore discovering the new born king would not have been difficult yet they failed. Knowledge alone without determination and commitment is not enough.
Beloved how good is your knowledge if it cannot affect your life positively.
My dear friend, today being the first sunday of the year let us remember that like wise men we also need a vision for our lives . And no matter the challenges we face we are not to give up on this vision. And also remember that;
1. Being a christian is a privilege
2. Stand by your vision or resolution no matter the challenges or the temptations you face.
3. How good is your education if it cannot affects you positively.
