THEME : TRANSFIGURATION : THE BEST YET TO COME

Dearly beloved, the readings this morning remind me of a story about a certain sick man who made a promise to the doctors that should he recover,he would give a donation in cash to the hospital but upon recovery he failed to fulfill the promise. However, this morning we hear the story of God who made a promise to Abraham and fulfilled the promise.

Beloved, this idea ties in well with the story of the transfiguration as recounted by Luke. For the story of the transfiguration was to strengthen the faith of the disciples in the face of the disappointment of Calvary.

Thus , the story of the transfiguration is an appeal; inviting us to embrace the discipline of Lent with the joy of Easter as our motivation. We are to practise fasting , alms giving and prayer with joy because of the spiritual benefits attached to them.

Beloved in Christ, to achieve this we are urged to take serious the warning of St. Paul in our second reading not to make our stomach our God. But unfortunately, most Christians today have made their stomach gods; where the truth is determined by the direction of one’s own stomach. Thus ,most Christians today are blinded by where they get their daily bread and will do all in their power defending the source of their daily bread.

Beloved in Christ, today is thus a reminder that the one who will never forget his promise is God and it is him we are to live for. However, the decision to live for God will always come at a price for those who accept his call. For just as it cost Abraham to travel from his homeland to a land unknown and for Christ his blood on the cross , we are always encouraged because with God the best is yet to come. There is therefore the need to persevere and not lose faith in God.
