DISCIPLESHIP : A JOURNEY OF TOTAL COMMITMENT
Beloved in Christ, this morning Mother Church invites us to reflect on the radical demand of Christian discipleship and how this affects our life. This call to total commitment demands that we let go of all distractions and obstacles that can come between us and the serving of the Lord.
For Jesus neither the care of self, care for the dead nor the care of one’s family should be placed above the demands of Christian discipleship. Thus, the response to this call demands that either we give our all or we forget about it.
Beloved in Christ, this understanding is highlighted in the first reading and the gospel passage of today. For the first reading, the use of the word ” left” in 1 Kings 19 : 21 is indicative of what the response to this call should be. This is affirmed by Elisha’s action ; slaughtering of the oxen, kissing the father and bidding of farewell to his men. He showed that he loved God more than his business and his own self. Thus, Elisha proved his commitment to God and the demands of discipleship by what he readily and willingly sacrificed.
Brethren, this is what Jesus’ encounter with the three young men in the gospel also teaches. However, though the three young men wanted to follow Jesus they were not ready to make the needed sacrifices. Most of us today are like them, because though we want to follow the Lord we are not ready to slaughter ” our oxen ” and until that is done our commitment to the Lord will be divided and it will affect our relationship with the Lord ( cf Luke 16 : 13).
Beloved, what does it mean to follow Jesus is the question we all need to answer as Christians. And to give a valid answer the second reading reminds us of the things we should stop doing, namely gossiping by telling us that the freedom we have in Christ is to help us follow and serve the Lord.
Let us therefore resolve to follow the Lord by sacrificing our “oxen” for the sake of Lord. www.padredolphyne.WordPress.com. http.//padredolphyne.blogspot.com
