HOMILY FOR THE 24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B
Isa.50:5 – 9a
Beloved in Christ, today I want us to reflect on” THE CAUSE OF OUR JOY ” as our theme for this sunday. This is to help us appreciate the fact that no matter the condition of our lives, should we genuinely count our blessings we will discover that no matter the challenges of our lives we still owe God our gratitude as individuals for how far He has brought us.
My dear friend, with this in mind we are able to appreciate better our Gospel passage for this morning; where Mark tells us that it is through suffering, death and resurrection that Jesus Christ became our Saviour. And thus outlines for us the conditions of Christian discipleship as;denying oneself, taking up one’s cross and following Jesus. And these conditions tie in well with our first reading this morning.
Therefore, like the suffering servant, Jesus’ life was one of radical obedience and conformity to God’s will.
Beloved, for our thanksgiving to bring honour to God, we must see it as the expression of our faith in God and also the fact that we are dependent on Him. And should we fail to do so James in the second reading will ask us to show our faith without our works.
Therefore, if we believe that we have come this far because of God then obedience to God becomes for us an obligation. And this obligation calls for a life of total surrender to the will of God.
Let us embrace this call to surrender our will to God since it will help us to make personal our perception and experience of God so as to motivate us in carrying our cross.
